We have an orchard with apple, pear and cherry trees. Every September we collect the apples and store them to give us a supply of cooking apples which normally lasts until about May the following year. This year our supply has been disappearing much faster than usual, and we could not explain it. As we live rurally we thought that some of them may have fallen prey to the rats, there are plenty of them around despite our 2 cats.
Recently, we got our answer, when we saw this emerging over the door of the old stable where the apples are kept:

Its clearly a bit big for him, but he managed to get it down to the floor. That part is not difficult - just a drop. the problem came when he decided that he wanted to take it home, wherever that might be:

A large apple poses quite a problem for a small squirrel! With some thought, determination and a great deal of effort he does make some progress:

He really ought to try a smaller apple next time!
