avast! Virus Cleaner 1.0.211

avast! Virus Cleaner is a free tool that will help you remove selected virus & worm infections from your computer.

When your computer gets infected by a virus or worm, the virus often schedule itself to be run automatically when you start your operating system; some of them even register themselves to be run when any other application is started.

Removing such a worm is not as simple as deleting it - when you just delete the worm file, your operating system might not be able to start your applications (such as Explorer) any more.

In order to properly remove the worm from your computer, it is often necessary to make additional fixes in your system registry, delete the links from your Startup Folder etc.

avast! Virus Cleaner will find and remove selected worms from your PC, as well as fix the registry and startup items to make sure your PC will work correctly after the disinfection.

When avast! Virus Cleaner detects and removes a known worm from your computer, its working/temporary files are removed as well. The same applies for worm-specific registry entries etc.

avast! Virus Cleaner is able not only disinfect / delete the infected files, but it can also deactivate the virus present in memory.

There is no need to start the tool from a Safe Mode - just start it and it will take care of the rest!

avast! Virus Cleaner is currently able to identify and remove the following worm families:

· Win32:Badtrans [Wrm]
· Win32:Beagle [Wrm] (aka Bagle), variants A-Z, AA-AH
· Win32:Blaster [Wrm] (aka Lovsan), variants A-I

avast! Home Edition

avast! Home Edition is a complete anti-virus package, that is is free for registered home non-commercial users. It contains an on-demand scanner with two interfaces (simple for novices and advanced for experienced users), an on-access scanner with Standard Shield (which protects against execution and opening malware programs) and an embedded e-mail scanner which scans incoming and outgoing email messages. avast! Home integrates with the Windows Explorer right click menu and also includes a special screen saver which is able to scan your system while your computer is not in use. Updates are incremental and frequently made available for manual or scheduled download. You will download a 60 days demo, if you would like to continue free usage beyond that time, you`ll need to register from the home page to obtain a free activation key by email.

avast! v5.0.70 Beta 1

Install

It should be possible to do the installation over existing v4.8, but this feature is still somewhat experimental so my suggestion would be to do a clean install (i.e. remove the current version of avast, reboot, and then do the install of v5 beta).
Limitations and bugs
QUOTE
This first beta still has some limitations/bugs/problems. To name the most important ones:

1. it currently doesn't contain the most up-to-date defs. That is, part of the defs are somewhat outdated as we're still making changes to the infrastructure. Hence, it is not recommended to use this beta as a tool to protect your system. Also, it is probably too early to do any detection tests at this time.

2. the Behavior Shield is not yet fully connected (has very limited functionality at the moment - is just a skeleton, really)

3. the antirootkit component is not connected

4. there is no licensing component in this version; i.e., no registration, no activation... however, there's a hard-wired time bomb that will disable the program in about 2 months (there will be multiple beta refreshes before that happens, and hopefully even the final product)

5. the sounds are missing. We plan to have sounds in the final product (and later betas) but they're not there now.

6. the design will likely change a little bit still... some of the corners will be rounded etc...

7. some of the Web Shield settings are missing

8. some of the Shield settings actually require the Shield to be restarted to become effective (Actions, Alerts, Report file, Packers, ...)

9. the GUI sometimes doesn't get refreshed automatically (i.e. you change something via the tray icon, and the main dialog doesn't update itself to reflect that change)

10. the iNews, Community and Event log pages are just placeholders atm

11. the Scan Result window still needs some changes

12. the built-in program updater doesn't ask for a reboot when it's done (even if it's necessary in order to apply the new update). Also, the update, when initiated from the main UI, may end up in an unexpected state. As an alternative, we recommend using the updater in Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> avast! Free Antivirus -> Change/Remove -> Update.

13. context-menu scan in Explorer doesn't work.
Disclaimer

BTW we plan to have roughly two beta refreshes a week until the program settles little bit. Then roughly one refresh a week.

I think we'll also reopen the Beta subcategory of the forum soon, so this will be the place to write.

avast! v5.0.143 Beta

Changelog

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=49173

Important: if you are using any of the previous v5.0 betas, you need to install this new version from scratch (i.e. remove the old beta, reboot, and start the new setup program). The built-in program updater (in the old betas) will unfortunately not work as we have slightly changed the internal format of the update packages.

It should be possible to do the installation over existing v4.8.

Normally, the installation doesn't require a reboot. This is however not the case if upgrading from v4.8.

Limitations and bugs
This is a fairly stable release which has already been extensively tested by our internal staff. It is complete with up-to-date defs, auto-update functionality, new protection modules etc. Most of the missing features is not related to virus detection/removal.

Here's a list of known bugs/limitations:
1. there is no licensing component in this version; i.e., no registration, no activation.
2. the help files are not there yet
3. the Behavior Shield is not yet fully connected (has limited functionality so far)
4. we plan to do roughly 30 more changes in the UI before the product is released

Latest changes:

· definition updates (GUI gets refreshed, new defs get reloaded etc)
· ability to make config changes under non-admin users (or non-elevated in case of Vista/W7)
· WebShield now working after changing its settings (if upgrading from a previous beta, and you had this issue, you need togo to WebShield's settings, Web scanning page, and ccheck the Scan all files radio button)
· better About box
· added help files (English and a few other languages)
· sizes/positions of windows are now persisted
· minimize button works as expected
· ability to view report file after a scan
· added "persistent cache" feature log - should be useful to troubleshoot AvastSvc.exe CPU usage peaks. The log file is called Logusntr.log

avast! 5.0.326 Beta

http://download525.avast.com/test5beta/setup_av_free.exe

Changelog (for Free AV and Internet Security products)

We recommend to install this build from scratch (as opposed to using the built-in updater). In fact, if you're using the previous beta (5.0.314) you may have a problem updating to this build because of a bug in the previous beta related to the checking of the license. So, it is better to uninstall this previous beta build, reboot, and install this new build.

There are quite a few fixes in this build as well as some new stuff. Most notable are:
- solved a nasty memory leak in AIS (reported a few times on the forum)
- (hopefully) solved all the issues related to trial licenses and registrations
- solved scan areas in custom scans
- solved areas in boot-time scanner
- solved some Behavior Shield -related crashes in aswSP.sys
- solved some sandbox-related crashes in aswSnx.sys
- stability and functional improvements in the firewall

A few things are still not implemented (a few of the firewall features, such as the Firewall logs, the low-level packet rules and the Process control expert settings).

Changelog (for Free AV and Internet Security products)

If you're running the previous beta (5.0.332) you should be able to go this new version by simply invoking the Program Update feature from within the avast UI. Alternatively, you can install this new version from scratch (uninstall the old one, reboot, and install this).

Compared to the previous beta build 332, this new version should solve a few issues, most notably:
- crashes related to the Behavior Shield module
- many improvements in the firewall
- improvements in the sandbox
- other stuff in the Behavior Shield
- fixes in the antirootkit module
- cosmetic fixes

Avast! Version 5.0 is here!!!

Today is the big day—the day we (and many of you) have been waiting for—we are starting the release of the Version 5.0 products today. This is a pretty complicated roll-out so we are staging it. Today we will be releasing the new products (and the new website) in English and French. Over the next 10 days or so, we will be releasing the products and website in 12 additional languages (German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, Russian, Polish, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese). Other languages will then be added as we have them available.

Three products (Free Antivirus, Pro Antivirus, and Internet Security) and a new website are being released today. Even though we have expanded our product portfolio, our philosophy of having and promoting a top-notch free antivirus is paramount. This philosophy has enabled us to achieve 100 million users and we are continuing it. As you read through our new website and launch information, you will see that not only is the new free product easier to use and more visually appealing than the old product, it provides even more security protection. And it is still free and free from annoying pop-ups and requests for money.

These products are not minor updates from the existing products. They are all new. Some of the changes—such as the new user interface—are obvious. Some are not obvious at all (such as the new scanning engine). All-in-all we think they are a vast improvement from the current products—modern, light, fast, and very effective. For details, see the product detail pages on the new website.

1. Avast! Free Antivirus. This is our new flagship product and replaces Avast Home Edition (we changed the name to emphasize the product is free). We focus this product on users that use the internet for web browsing and email. If that is what you do on the internet, this is the product you need. We are very proud of this product and we stack it up against anyone else’s paid antivirus—in fact, we have recently started submitting this product in lieu of our paid products to all of the industry standard tests. Virus Bulletin, one of the most respected journals, recently called this product “….nothing short of a miracle” (see separate blog post). Google selected this product for incorporation in many of their Google Packs.

2. Avast! Internet Security. This is our brand-new product and is focused on users that do on-line banking or shopping or that have sensitive data on their computer. We believe that these users need some extra layers of protection and developed this product to provide three more layers. This product takes the free antivirus and adds a 2-way silent firewall, a sandbox, and anti-spam. The firewall ensures that only trusted applications are able to receive or send data across the internet. The sandbox provides a means of executing your browser (or any other application) in a protected environment—thus even if you get infected, the infection does not leave the sandbox and does not harm your computer. And the anti-spam helps you get rid of all that irritating email you receive every day. And, we have made this product attractive to consumer users—a single license can be used on 3 computers in your household.

3. Avast! Pro Antivirus. This is the update to the old Professional Edition. We focus this product on individuals that want to customize their security and on businesses. It is the same as Internet Security but without the firewall or anti-spam. This allows world-class security using your own personal choice of firewall and anti-spam.

To support these products, there is also a brand new website. Today the website will only be available in English and French. But, as the other languages roll out, the language-specific websites will also.

If you are using a 4.8 product (home or professional editions), the update is pretty painless. Sometime in the near future, the 4.8 product will tell you version 5.0 is available. You will have the choice of a free upgrade or a special existing-user offer for the new Internet Security. All you have to do is click which option you want, and you will be upgraded. As we have about 100 million users, these messages will take a month or two to get to all users. If you don’t want to wait for this automated message, you can manually upgrade and get the same special offers by clicking on the homepage banner that asks if you are already a 4.8 user.

As you can imagine, it was a massive effort to release three new products and a new website at the same time. All of our teams have done a great job in making this happen. Development of course developed the new products. But many other teams were also involved—virus lab and research, localization and translation, website development, on-line store, and marketing.

If you are reading this at launch time, we will think of you as we celebrate with the Czech national drink……

Avast! Free Antivirus v5.0.393 Beta

Changelog

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54451.0

we'll soon be releasing a program update for v5 (a first program update after the official launch). If you'd like, you can test the pre-release bits now. Anyone who has problems with the official build (5.0.377) is welcome to do so.

(sorry, no incremental update for now - but running this full package on a computer with 5.0.377 already installed should allow you to do the update; alternatively, you can always reinstall).

This is a service release that is supposed to fix most of the issues reported for the 5.0.377 version. Most importatly, the intermittent BSODs should hopefully be gone.
